SRINAGAR, Sep 16: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reiterated that privatisation of electricity in the Union Territory is not on the agenda, emphasizing that strengthening and reforming the power sector is central to his vision for economic growth.
Addressing the 58th Engineers’ Day at SKICC, held to honour Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Abdullah said, “We are not talking about privatisation. If we reduce our losses, improve billing efficiency, and enhance revenue generation, there will be no need for it. My vision is to strengthen and reform the power sector in J-K.”
Highlighting the critical role of electricity in economic development, the Chief Minister stated that efficient generation and distribution are key to improving J&K’s financial situation. He called for reducing power losses and harnessing the region’s vast hydropower potential, which he identified as the most viable resource despite competition from low-cost solar power.
“This is the only way to change the financial situation of J-K. We should generate electricity and sell it to other regions, especially when their production is low. But to achieve this, we must first bring down losses in the power sector,” Abdullah said.
He also stressed that tariff rationalisation should consider the people’s capacity to pay, ensuring equitable contributions from the rich while easing the burden on poorer consumers. Abdullah underscored his personal commitment by holding the Power Development Department portfolio himself, citing it as the most important sector for J&K’s prosperity.
The Chief Minister lauded successful initiatives like the Baglihar hydroelectric project, which has significantly transformed J&K’s power scenario despite challenges such as high installation costs and lack of counter guarantees. He urged the department to maintain momentum in reducing losses and improving operational efficiency, reinforcing the strategic importance of hydropower in the region’s economic growth.
