NEW DELHI, May 29: Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar on Friday assumed office as the 48th Vice Chief of the Indian Navy, taking over as the force’s second-highest ranking officer after playing a crucial role in strengthening naval operational preparedness during Operation Sindoor.

Before his appointment to the top naval position, Vice Admiral Kochhar served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), India’s only integrated tri-services theatre command responsible for safeguarding strategically important maritime regions.
Earlier, as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, he played a major role in overseeing forward deployment of critical naval assets during Operation Sindoor amid heightened security challenges in the western maritime sector.
Vice Admiral Kochhar succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, who has now been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, the officer was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988. A specialist in gunnery and missile warfare, he has served in several operational, command and policy assignments during a distinguished naval career spanning more than 37 years.
Throughout his service, he commanded several frontline warships, including INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti and INS Kirpan. He also served as the commissioning commanding officer of the stealth frigate INS Trikand and later commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
During his tenure aboard INS Vikramaditya, the carrier successfully completed operational integration of its air wing, significantly strengthening India’s naval aviation capability.
Vice Admiral Kochhar is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Naval War College, Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom. He has also handled several strategic and policy-oriented assignments at Naval Headquarters.
After being promoted to Flag rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition. In 2021, he took command of the Western Fleet and later served as Commandant of the National Defence Academy, where he focused on improving training standards and institutional infrastructure.
He assumed charge as Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command on May 25, 2024, during a period marked by evolving maritime security concerns and intensified operational requirements along the western seaboard.
According to the Indian Navy, he successfully led responses to both conventional and emerging maritime threats while supervising high-tempo naval operations linked to Operation Sindoor.
For his distinguished leadership and service, Vice Admiral Kochhar was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026.
During his tenure at the Andaman and Nicobar Command, he also contributed significantly towards enhancing operational coordination and strengthening integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force under the tri-services command structure.
