HYDERABAD, Aug 26: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi has appealed to people to strengthen the party and support its candidates in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad on Tuesday night on the occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, the AIMIM chief said Muslims, like other communities, should have political leadership capable of raising issues concerning them.
Owaisi referred to the party’s performance in the Bihar Assembly elections, where AIMIM secured five seats, and expressed confidence that it could make a strong showing in Uttar Pradesh.
He urged supporters to work for the party and pray for the success of its candidates in the upcoming polls.
Arguing for greater political representation, Owaisi questioned why Muslims should not have their own leadership when other communities have political representatives.
He said stronger representation would contribute to India’s democracy and the protection of constitutional values. Referring to parliamentary representation, he claimed that the community’s population was not reflected adequately in the number of MPs.
The AIMIM president also spoke about the recent controversy surrounding Vande Mataram. Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he argued that the song’s first two stanzas had historically been selected for official singing and invoked the names of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Rabindranath Tagore.
Owaisi alleged that any attempt to impose a broader requirement through legislation would disregard the views associated with these national figures.
Turning to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah and said the government should focus on employment and other economic concerns.
Owaisi referred to UCC related legislation in Uttarakhand, Assam and Gujarat and argued that uniformity should not be equated with equality.
He also alleged that certain personal laws were being applied to Muslims and asserted that attempts to impose a uniform framework would not succeed.
The AIMIM chief further criticised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), alleging that it had raised objections to the Constitution soon after its adoption and had favoured Manusmriti instead.
On the Allahabad High Court’s recent dismissal of a plea seeking permission for a student to wear a hijab with her school uniform, Owaisi said he disagreed with the ruling.
Calling the judgement “wrong”, he alleged that it amounted to an attack on Islam and maintained that he was opposed to the court’s decision.
