WASHINGTON, Oct 4 : Padmini Pillai from Boston and Nalini Tata from New York have been named to the prestigious 2024-2025 class of White House Fellows, joining 15 exceptional individuals selected from across the United States. The White House Fellows program, established in 1964, provides a unique opportunity for promising leaders to gain first-hand experience in the highest levels of government. During their fellowship year, participants work alongside senior White House staff, cabinet members, and top administration officials, honing their leadership skills to better serve their communities.
Padmini Pillai, originally from Newton, Massachusetts, is an immunoengineer with a focus on developing therapies that bridge immunology and biomaterial design. She has led groundbreaking research at MIT, where her team developed a tumor-selective nanotherapy for treating difficult-to-target cancers. Pillai played a prominent role during the COVID-19 pandemic, appearing in major media outlets such as CNBC, The Atlantic, and The New York Times to discuss critical topics like vaccination, immunity, and the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities. She holds a PhD in immunobiology from Yale University and a BA in biochemistry from Regis College. As a White House Fellow, Pillai will be working with the Social Security Administration.
Nalini Tata, a neurosurgery resident at the New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center/Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, has been appointed to the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs. Tata has dedicated her career to treating a wide range of emergency and elective neurosurgical conditions at a Level-1 trauma center and world-renowned cancer institute. Her published work spans clinical research and public policy, with a particular emphasis on advancing equitable access to healthcare. Tata’s deep commitment to public service is reflected in her long-standing interest in public policy, which she pursued alongside her medical career. She holds a BSc in neurobiology from Brown University, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, an MD from Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School.
