New Delhi, Sep 12 : Following the recent Gen Z protests in Nepal, Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire and National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal issued a joint statement on Friday, condemning the violence and destruction that unfolded during the demonstrations.
The protests left the nation shaken, with loss of lives and widespread damage to public property. The leaders extended condolences to the families of the youth protesters and security personnel who lost their lives, while also wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. They called upon the government to ensure proper medical treatment and support for those affected.
The statement highlighted the extensive damage caused, including vandalism and arson at the Federal Parliament complex in Baneshwor, the Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar, multiple government offices, residential and commercial spaces, and even media outlets and historical records. Terming the acts of destruction a “deep national loss,” the leaders stressed the need to safeguard Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
Ghimire and Dahal underscored that no individual or group should undermine the rule of law or the Constitution. They appealed to all parties to resolve differences through legal and democratic channels, urging the state to address public grievances in a way that strengthens democracy and ensures peace, stability, and prosperity.
The joint appeal comes at a crucial time as the country faces political uncertainty, with the appointment of an interim Prime Minister on the agenda and mounting public unrest.
