Parliament’s Budget Session Starts Today: Important Dates, Agenda and Highlights

President’s address, Union Budget and Economic Survey headline Parliament’s key legislative session.

New Delhi, Jan 28 : Parliament convenes on Wednesday to begin the Budget Session, widely regarded as the most significant legislative period of the year. The session will open with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses, setting the agenda for the weeks ahead. The address will be followed by a Motion of Thanks, which is expected to spark extensive debate.

The session will see close examination of the government’s fiscal strategy, policy priorities, and expenditure plans. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present the Union Budget for 2026–27 on February 1, an uncommon Sunday sitting that will require special parliamentary arrangements.

Ahead of the Budget, the Economic Survey is likely to be tabled on January 29, offering an overview of economic performance and laying the groundwork for the government’s proposals.

Spread over 65 days with 30 sittings, the session will be held in two phases. The first phase will focus on financial business and preliminary discussions, followed by a recess during which Standing Committees will examine demands for grants. Parliament will adjourn on February 13 and reconvene on March 9 for final debates and voting.

An all-party meeting was held on Tuesday to facilitate smooth proceedings. Leaders from across the political spectrum were briefed on the schedule and agenda, with the government expressing hope for constructive engagement. While the ruling side is expected to push its economic and development agenda, the opposition is likely to raise concerns related to policy and governance.
