Patiala House Court Issues Notice on Application in Priya–Mandhira Kapur Defamation Case

Patiala House Court to hear arguments on March 30 after application seeking documents

New Delhi: The Priya Kapur Mandhira Kapur defamation case took a new turn as the Patiala House Court issued a notice on an application filed by Mandhira Kapur Smith seeking production of documents from Priya Kapur.

The criminal defamation complaint was filed earlier this year by Priya Kapur against Mandhira, alleging that the latter circulated videos and posts on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and X that identified her by name and contained accusations damaging to her reputation. According to the complaint, the statements were intended to generate hostility, ridicule and social isolation.

During the court proceedings, counsel representing Priya Kapur argued that the application filed by Mandhira Kapur was not maintainable. The lawyer indicated that no formal reply would be filed at this stage but reserved the right to present legal arguments during the hearing. The matter has now been scheduled for further arguments on March 30.

Following the filing of the defamation case, Mandhira Kapur publicly denied making false statements and maintained that the claims she made were already part of court records. She also stated that she first learned about the case through social media and had not received any official notice at that time.

The dispute is linked to the family of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, whose estate has been the subject of an ongoing legal conflict. Members of his family, including his mother and former wife Karisma Kapoor, are reportedly involved in legal proceedings related to the ownership of assets valued at around ₹30,000 crore.
