Srinagar, Feb 24: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to introduce three significant bills in the upcoming Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, focusing on job security, substance abuse, and land rights. The initiative, led by PDP leader and Pulwama MLA Waheed Para, underscores the party’s commitment to addressing pressing socio-economic issues in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Para emphasized that the bills have been introduced under the leadership of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti. “One of our primary concerns is the plight of daily wagers and casual laborers who have been struggling for years without job security. The bill for their regularization seeks to provide them with permanent employment and stability,” he stated.
The second bill aims to curb the rising menace of alcohol and drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir, which Para described as a growing social crisis. “Substance abuse is destroying families and putting immense pressure on our youth. Regulating alcohol consumption and implementing stricter measures to control drug trafficking are crucial for a safer and healthier society. We also see this as a vital step toward ensuring women’s safety,” he added.
The third proposed legislation seeks to protect residents from forced evictions due to ongoing demolition drives. Para pointed out that many families residing on State Land, Khai Charai, Shamilat, and Nazool land are facing displacement as authorities continue clearing properties. “The government’s bulldozers have rendered people homeless overnight. We demand ownership rights for those who have been living on these lands for generations. Housing is a basic necessity, and we cannot allow widespread displacement,” he asserted.
Para urged all political parties, including the National Conference, to rise above partisan politics and support these bills for the welfare of the people. “Employment, shelter, and social stability are not political issues; they are fundamental rights that affect every citizen, regardless of party or religious affiliations,” he said.
The PDP leader also highlighted the link between unemployment and drug abuse, warning that failure to address these concerns could push Jammu and Kashmir into deeper social distress. “If we do not act now, we risk making Kashmir landless and homeless. It is our collective responsibility to ensure a secure future for our youth,” Para concluded.
