Peoples Conference Candidate Sajad Lone Faces EC Notice for Sharing Promotional Content Without Pre-Certification in Baramulla Lok Sabha Contest

Srinagar, 11-05-2024 : The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Sajad Lone, the candidate of the Peoples Conference contesting for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir, for an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

The notice was prompted by concerns raised by the Nodal Officer, MCC Kupwara, regarding Lone’s sharing of a “promotional” video clip on social media without obtaining prior clearance from district election authorities.

According to the notice, a District Level Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) was established to review, scrutinize, and verify all advertisements of individual contesting candidates of political parties before their dissemination in electronic and print media during the election period. This measure aims to prevent cases of paid news.

The notice further explained that contesting candidates from all political parties are obligated to ensure pre-certification of political advertisements by the aforementioned MCMC, in accordance with the provided instructions.

The notice highlighted a specific instance of violation involving the upload of a promotional video clip on Sajad Lone’s social media handle without the necessary pre-certification or clearance from the District MCMC. This action, deemed a clear breach of the MCC by the People’s Conference, raised concerns regarding compliance with election regulations.

Consequently, Sajad Gani Lone has been given notice to provide an explanation for this violation within one day. Failure to respond within the stipulated timeframe will result in the matter being referred to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, for appropriate action in accordance with the rules.
