Philippines Senator Evades Arrest Over ICC Drug War Charges

Former police chief Ronald dela Rosa refuses to surrender as the International Criminal Court pursues crimes against humanity case.

MANILA, May 13 : Political tensions escalated in the Philippines after Senator Ronald dela Rosa evaded authorities attempting to serve an International Criminal Court arrest warrant linked to the country’s controversial anti-drug campaign.

Dela Rosa, who previously served as national police chief under former President Rodrigo Duterte, took refuge inside the Senate building after federal agents arrived to execute the warrant.

The ICC accuses him of crimes against humanity connected to thousands of killings during Duterte’s anti-drug crackdown between 2016 and 2018. Human rights groups have long alleged that many victims were executed without due process.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the senator rushing through Senate corridors before reaching areas where arresting officers lacked jurisdiction. He later declared that he would not surrender voluntarily and vowed to fight extradition proceedings.

The dramatic incident intensified political divisions in the Philippines, where supporters of Duterte continue to wield strong influence despite international criticism.

Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte faced fresh political turmoil after lawmakers voted to impeach her over corruption and misconduct allegations. However, analysts believe her allies in the Senate may prevent removal from office.

The ICC investigation has become one of the most sensitive international legal cases involving the Philippines in recent years. The court argues that large-scale abuses during the drug war amount to systematic crimes against civilians.

Duterte himself remains detained in The Hague awaiting legal proceedings related to the same investigation.

Human rights organisations welcomed the latest developments, saying accountability is essential for justice and democratic reform. Supporters of Duterte, however, accused the ICC of interfering in Philippine sovereignty.

The political crisis is expected to dominate national politics ahead of future elections as debates continue over accountability, human rights and the legacy of the anti-drug campaign.
