Philippines Typhoons Claim 259 Lives as Rescue Efforts Continue

Super Typhoon Fung-wong and Typhoon Kalmaegi Leave Millions Displaced, Cause Widespread Damage

Philippin, Nov 12 : The Philippines is reeling under the devastating impact of two powerful typhoons, with the combined death toll now reaching 259, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. Millions of residents have been displaced as the storms ravaged homes, farms, and critical infrastructure.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that Super Typhoon Fung wong, which made landfall on Sunday in north-central Luzon, caused at least 27 deaths, with two others still missing. The typhoon weakened significantly as it moved inland but left a trail of destruction across affected areas.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck on November 4, triggered massive flooding and deadly mudslides in central Philippines, claiming 232 lives, leaving 112 missing, and injuring more than 500 people. Cebu province, still recovering from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake on September 30, reported the highest fatalities.

The storms have disrupted daily life, damaged roads, bridges, and public utilities, and forced evacuations of thousands. Fung-wong marks the 21st tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, surpassing the country’s annual average of 20 storms, highlighting the growing vulnerability of the nation to extreme weather events.
