Brussels, July 15: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of strategic meetings with senior European Union officials and Belgium’s top leadership in Brussels, reaffirming India’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation with Europe. The discussions focused on trade, agriculture, clean energy, technology, investment and sustainable industrial development as both sides seek to accelerate their long-term strategic partnership.
The engagements come during Goyal’s two-day visit to Belgium, where India and the European Union are working to translate recent progress on the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) into broader economic and technological collaboration.
Agriculture Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
One of the key meetings was held with European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen, where both leaders reviewed opportunities to deepen cooperation in the agricultural sector following the positive momentum generated by the India-EU FTA negotiations.
The discussions explored measures to strengthen agricultural trade, improve resilient agri-food supply chains and encourage sustainable farming practices. Food security, innovation in agriculture and farmer-centric growth remained central themes during the interaction.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Goyal described the discussions as productive and emphasized the importance of creating stronger agricultural partnerships capable of delivering long-term benefits to farmers and consumers across both regions.
He highlighted that resilient food systems and collaborative agricultural innovation will play an increasingly important role in addressing future global food challenges.
Clean Energy and Climate Action Discussions
Goyal also met European Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, where climate cooperation emerged as another major pillar of India-EU engagement.
The two leaders exchanged views on accelerating collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, low-carbon technologies and sustainable industrial development.
Both sides emphasized that innovation, clean technology investments and resilient supply chains will be essential for supporting their respective net-zero commitments while maintaining economic growth.
The discussions also covered expanding cooperation in climate-friendly manufacturing, energy transition policies and research partnerships aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable development.
India and the European Union continue to view clean technology as a major area of future collaboration, with both economies investing significantly in renewable energy infrastructure and green industrial ecosystems.
India-Belgium Economic Relations Receive Fresh Push
The Commerce Minister later held extensive talks with Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Employment, Economy and Agriculture David Clarinval, focusing on strengthening bilateral trade and investment.
The meeting reviewed opportunities across multiple sectors including:
Trade and commerce
Technology collaboration
Logistics
Industrial investment
Workforce mobility
Economic partnerships
Both leaders also discussed the wider benefits expected from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and expressed confidence that closer economic integration would create new opportunities for businesses operating in both regions.
Goyal reiterated India’s commitment to building stronger commercial ties with Belgium, which serves as one of Europe’s major logistics and trade gateways.
Focus on Logistics and Supply Chains
As part of his Brussels programme, the minister is scheduled to visit the Port of Antwerp, one of Europe’s largest ports and a global logistics hub.
The visit aims to study advanced practices in:
Multimodal transport
Green logistics
Smart port management
Supply chain resilience
The experience is expected to support India’s own efforts to modernize logistics infrastructure and improve international trade efficiency under various national connectivity initiatives.
Diamond Industry Collaboration
Another important engagement during the visit includes the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, globally recognized as one of the world’s leading diamond trading hubs.
The discussions are expected to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between Indian and Belgian businesses involved in the gems and jewellery sector.
India remains one of the world’s largest centres for diamond cutting and polishing, making closer collaboration with Antwerp strategically important for expanding exports and strengthening the global diamond value chain.
Industry Leaders to Join Strategic Discussions
Besides government-level meetings, Goyal is also interacting with senior executives from leading European companies to encourage greater investment in India’s rapidly growing industrial ecosystem.
Meetings have been scheduled with representatives from:
Thales Group
Silox Group
The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in sectors such as aerospace, defence manufacturing, cybersecurity, speciality chemicals, battery recycling and sustainable manufacturing technologies.
These engagements align with India’s broader objective of attracting high-quality foreign investment while promoting advanced manufacturing and technology transfer.
India-EU Business Roundtable
The minister is also participating in the India-EU Business Roundtable, where government officials and business leaders are expected to discuss ways to improve the investment climate and remove barriers to trade.
Key themes include:
Foreign direct investment
Trade facilitation
Digital technologies
Innovation partnerships
Industrial competitiveness
Sustainable economic growth
The dialogue provides an important platform for strengthening commercial engagement between Indian and European companies.
Trade and Technology Council Meeting
A major highlight of the visit is the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Ministerial Meeting, where Goyal is co-chairing discussions alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada.
The Trade and Technology Council serves as the highest institutional platform for strategic cooperation between India and the European Union.
Its agenda covers several critical areas, including:
Trusted technologies

The council has become an increasingly important mechanism for aligning policies in response to evolving global economic and technological challenges.
Strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership
India and the European Union have steadily expanded cooperation across trade, technology, digital innovation and climate action over recent years. Both sides are working toward concluding a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement that is expected to significantly boost bilateral commerce and investment.
Goyal’s engagements in Brussels reflect India’s broader strategy of building resilient international partnerships that promote sustainable development, industrial competitiveness and innovation-led growth.
With discussions covering agriculture, renewable energy, logistics, advanced manufacturing and technology, the visit underscores the growing importance of India-EU cooperation in shaping future economic opportunities while supporting shared global sustainability goals.
