New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Seychelles on a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing India’s maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Prime Minister is attending Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour at the invitation of the island nation’s leadership. The visit is expected to reinforce India’s strategic engagement with one of its key maritime partners.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Seychelles President and senior government officials on expanding cooperation in maritime security, defence, blue economy, climate resilience, digital connectivity, healthcare, education and capacity building.
Officials said the visit reflects India’s growing emphasis on strengthening partnerships with Indian Ocean nations under its broader regional vision for security and sustainable development.
Maritime security is expected to remain a central theme of the discussions. India has consistently supported Seychelles through coastal surveillance systems, patrol vessels, defence training, hydrographic surveys and disaster response cooperation. Both countries also work closely to combat piracy, illegal fishing, narcotics trafficking and other transnational maritime crimes.
The visit comes at a time when geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean continues to intensify, making cooperation between India and island nations increasingly significant for maintaining regional stability.
Economic cooperation is another important area on the agenda. Both countries are expected to explore opportunities in renewable energy, tourism, fisheries, digital governance and sustainable infrastructure development.
India has emerged as one of Seychelles’ key development partners through grant assistance, concessional financing and technical support across several sectors. Numerous community development projects supported by India have contributed to healthcare, education and public infrastructure in the island nation.
Officials noted that the visit also highlights the long-standing people to people ties between the two countries, with the Indian diaspora playing an important role in Seychelles’ economy and society.
The two sides are also expected to review ongoing development projects and identify new areas for collaboration under India’s regional initiatives focusing on connectivity, maritime cooperation and economic resilience.
Strategic analysts believe closer engagement with Indian Ocean island nations strengthens India’s role as a reliable regional partner while contributing to stability across critical sea lanes that support global trade and energy supplies.
Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the National Day celebrations is expected to symbolise the strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries and reaffirm India’s commitment to expanding cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region.
The visit is likely to conclude with announcements aimed at enhancing bilateral collaboration in defence, maritime security, sustainable development and economic partnership, further reinforcing the longstanding friendship between India and Seychelles.
