New Delhi, Jan 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated the people of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on their Statehood Day, lauding the three northeastern states for their unique cultural heritage, natural beauty, and growing role in India’s development.
In a series of posts on X, PM Modi highlighted the distinct strengths of each state while underlining the broader significance of the Northeast in the country’s growth story. “I convey my heartfelt greetings to the people of Meghalaya on their Statehood Day. The people of Meghalaya have made strong contributions to the development of our nation. Its cultural vibrancy and scenic beauty are widely admired,” he tweeted, expressing hope that the state would continue to scale new heights of progress.
Addressing Manipur, the Prime Minister said, “On the occasion of Manipur Statehood Day, I extend my warm greetings to my sisters and brothers of the state. People from Manipur are enriching the progress of India. Its passion for sports, culture, and nature is noteworthy, and I wish it continues to move forward on the path of development.”
Regarding Tripura, PM Modi noted the state’s “remarkable blend of tradition and modernity,” adding, “The state has witnessed pioneering transformations across sectors, and its people are adding momentum to India’s growth trajectory. I pray that Tripura prospers significantly in the coming times.”
Summing up his messages, the Prime Minister wrote, “Today, three states of the Northeast Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura are celebrating their Statehood Day. My heartiest congratulations to all my brothers and sisters here. I sincerely wish that the people of these states achieve success in every field through their own efforts.”
Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura attained statehood on January 21, 1972, under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, aimed at giving greater political autonomy to the region. Over the decades, the three states have developed distinct identities shaped by their indigenous cultures, languages, and histories while playing an increasingly visible role in national life.
The Prime Minister’s greetings come amid the Centre’s continued focus on the development of the Northeast, often described as “Ashta Lakshmi,” or eight forms of prosperity. Recent initiatives in the region have emphasized infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, sports, and cultural promotion, alongside efforts to integrate the Northeast more closely with the national economy.
Statehood Day celebrations across Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura typically include official functions, cultural programmes, and public events showcasing local traditions, achievements, and aspirations for peace, stability, and inclusive development.
