PM Modi Flags ‘Worrisome’ West Asia Situation, Cites Economic and Public Impact in Lok Sabha

Prime Minister highlights challenges to energy supply, trade, and citizen safety amid ongoing conflict

New Delhi, Mar 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the ongoing crisis in West Asia as “worrisome,” warning that it has had severe repercussions on the global economy and the livelihoods of millions. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he underscored that the security and welfare of Indians remain the government’s top priority amid the conflict.

“The situation in West Asia has persisted for over three weeks, significantly affecting international trade and the daily lives of people,” Modi said, adding that the government is actively monitoring developments and ready to provide assistance wherever needed.

He highlighted the disruption in cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for India’s energy imports. “India relies on the region for 60% of its LPG requirements. We are prioritising domestic supply and ramping up production to minimise impact,” Modi explained.

The Prime Minister also pointed out the broader challenges arising from the conflict, including economic strain, humanitarian concerns, and national security implications. He noted that India maintains extensive trade links with West Asian nations and that around 1 crore Indians live and work in the region.

Modi emphasized the importance of a unified parliamentary message to the world regarding the crisis. He assured that the government has been in constant touch with West Asian leaders to secure the safety of Indians and provide timely assistance.

“While some lives have been tragically lost and injuries reported, the government is actively supporting affected families and ensuring the welfare of our citizens abroad,” he added.
