New Delhi, Sep 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked the seventh anniversary of Ayushman Bharat, asserting that the flagship scheme has revolutionized public healthcare in India by providing financial protection and dignity to millions of beneficiaries. Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat offers an annual health cover of ₹5 lakh and extends coverage to the poor as well as all senior citizens above 70 years of age.
Speaking on X, PM Modi said, “Today we mark 7 years of Ayushman Bharat. This initiative anticipated the needs of the future and focused on ensuring top-quality as well as affordable healthcare. India is witnessing a revolution in public healthcare, ensuring financial protection and dignity.” He further highlighted that the scheme demonstrates how scale, compassion, and technology can empower citizens.
According to the official government handle, Ayushman Bharat now covers over 55 crore citizens, making it the world’s largest health assurance program. More than 42 crore Ayushman cards have been issued so far. The scheme has also increased government health expenditure from 29% to 48%, while reducing out of pocket costs from 63% to 39%, effectively protecting over six crore families from financial ruin due to medical emergencies every year.
The initiative emphasizes accessible, cashless medical care, ensuring that illness does not push families into poverty, reflecting a significant step toward equitable and sustainable public healthcare in India.
