Kochi, Mar 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the Centre’s decision to change the state’s name from Kerala to Keralam as a moment of happiness and pride for the Malayali community.

Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha in Kochi, the Prime Minister said the development holds special significance for the people of the state and reflects their cultural identity.

During his speech, Modi also praised the contributions of Kerala’s fishing community, recalling their bravery and humanitarian efforts during the devastating floods that struck the state in 2018. He said fishermen played a vital role in rescue operations and demonstrated remarkable courage and dedication in helping affected residents.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the work of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha, noting that the organisation has been advocating for the rights and welfare of fishermen for the past five decades.

Highlighting initiatives undertaken by the Union government for the fishing sector, Modi said several measures have been introduced to improve the livelihoods and safety of fishermen. He mentioned that more than 4,500 satellite-based transponders have been installed on fishing boats to enhance security and communication while at sea.

Earlier in the day, Modi arrived at Kochi International Airport around 11:30 am and later travelled by helicopter to the naval base before proceeding by road to Marine Drive, where the jubilee function was held.
