14-10-2023 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism about the newly established ferry service connecting India and Sri Lanka during a virtual message delivered at the inaugural flag-off event of this maritime link, which spans from India’s Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka. PM Modi highlighted that the ferry service holds the potential to significantly boost connectivity, promote trade, and further strengthen the enduring ties between the two nations.
He pointed out that during the recent visit of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, both countries collaborated to create a vision document that outlines the economic partnership objectives they aim to achieve. The PM emphasized that the overarching theme of this partnership is “connectivity.”
In his address, PM Modi drew upon the words of the renowned poet Subramania Bharati, who had referenced a bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka in his song “Sindhu Nadhiyin Misai.” The launch of the ferry service is a living testament to the historical and cultural connections shared between the two nations, breathing life into these age-old bonds.
