PM Modi Highlights Realistic Approach to Defence Spending and Modernisation

Prime Minister urges private sector to boost innovation, share growth gains and deepen global integration

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined that India’s defence spending and upgrades are aligned with evolving global challenges, asserting that strengthening the armed forces remains a top priority.

In an interview with PTI, Modi said the record high allocation for defence should be viewed as part of a sustained reform effort rather than in isolation. He stressed that as technology transforms warfare and geopolitical tensions intensify, India must equip its forces with cutting edge indigenous innovation and industrial capability.

Referring to Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister said the mission reflected the country’s growing familiarity with technology driven warfare and demonstrated the impact of reforms undertaken over the past decade. He added that preparedness and strength are essential in a world marked by shifting power equations, prolonged conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, and emerging cyber threats closer to home.

On the economic front, Modi described recent trade agreements as part of India’s accelerating global integration. He said deals with partners such as the UK and the European Union would enhance supply-chain integration, expand market access and create opportunities for labour-intensive sectors including textiles, electronics and engineering goods.

According to him, these agreements go beyond tariff cuts by embedding structural reforms and positioning Indian firms more deeply within global value chains. He urged businesses to respond decisively by investing in research and development, adopting advanced technologies and improving productivity.

Highlighting inclusive growth, the Prime Minister said competitiveness must rest on innovation and efficiency rather than protection. He emphasised that productivity gains should be shared fairly among workers, shareholders and management to ensure sustainable and socially legitimate growth.

Addressing the Union Budget’s emphasis on women, Modi said empowerment remains central to policymaking. He noted that Nirmala Sitharaman presenting the Budget for a ninth consecutive time symbolised progress and inspiration.

He pointed to hostel provisions aimed at reducing dropouts among female students pursuing higher studies, particularly in science and research, where long commutes often pose barriers. Additionally, plans to train 1.5 lakh caregivers next year and expand institutions for Allied Health Professionals were described as steps toward formalising care work, generating certified employment for women and strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

The Prime Minister reiterated that defence preparedness, economic reform and social inclusion form interconnected pillars of India’s long-term national strategy.
