Born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, into a humble family, Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), popularly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’, rose to prominence through sheer determination and hard work. He served as India’s 11th President from 2002 to 2007.
Kalam made landmark contributions as Project Director of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), successfully placing the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980 and securing India’s place in the Space Club. He played a pivotal role in developing the PSLV configuration at ISRO, as well as India’s AGNI and PRITHVI missiles, fostering indigenous technological capabilities through collaboration across multiple institutions.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Kalam was passionate about motivating the youth, authoring influential books such as Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020, all emphasizing the importance of dreaming big and nation building.
APJ Abdul Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration, innovation, and visionary leadership.
