PM Modi Honors Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi On Death Anniversary

Leaders remember Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to India’s political and technological transformation

NEW DELHI, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, remembering his contribution to the nation’s development and public life.

In a brief message shared on social media platform X, Modi expressed respect for the late Congress leader and acknowledged his service to the country.

“Tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary,” the Prime Minister said in his post.

Rajiv Gandhi, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, was born on August 20, 1944, in Mumbai. He entered active politics following the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi and later became one of India’s youngest Prime Ministers after the assassination of his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

He is widely remembered for introducing reforms aimed at modernising India’s telecommunications and technology sectors. During his tenure, several initiatives were launched to strengthen computerisation, education and administrative decentralisation.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election campaign rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. His death marked one of the most tragic moments in Indian political history.

Leaders from different political parties and Congress workers across the country also paid homage to the former Prime Minister on the occasion of the Rajiv Gandhi death anniversary.
