PM Modi in Assam from Today: Major Announcements and Events Planned

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Assam on January 17–18, participating in a mass Bodo cultural performance in Guwahati and laying the foundation stone for a major wildlife friendly highway project near Kaziranga.

New Delhi, Jan 17 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam on a two-day programme starting today, during which he will attend a major cultural celebration and launch a high value infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity while protecting wildlife.

According to inputs from IANS, the Prime Minister will be in the state on January 17 and 18.

On Saturday evening, around 6 pm, PM Modi will attend a large scale Bodo cultural programme at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. The event will feature Bagurumba Dohou 2026, being billed as a landmark celebration of Bodo heritage.

More than 10,000 artistes from the Bodo community are expected to perform the traditional Bagurumba dance in a single, synchronised presentation. Participants will represent 81 Assembly constituencies across 23 districts, making it one of the largest coordinated cultural performances ever held in Assam.

Bagurumba is among the most recognisable folk dances of the Bodo people, traditionally performed by young women, with men providing musical accompaniment. The dance draws inspiration from nature, reflecting movements of birds, butterflies, leaves and flowers, and symbolises fertility, joy, peace and harmony. It is closely associated with festivals such as Bwisagu, the Bodo New Year, and Domasi.

On Sunday morning, around 11 am, the Prime Minister will travel to Kaliabor to lay the foundation stone for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, an infrastructure initiative valued at over Rs 6,950 crore.

The project involves the four laning of the 86-km Kaliabor–Numaligarh stretch of National Highway 715. Designed as an environmentally sensitive highway, it includes a 35-km elevated wildlife corridor through Kaziranga National Park, along with 21 km of bypasses and 30 km of widened highway.

Officials said the project aims to improve road connectivity across Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts, while ensuring the free movement of wildlife and reducing human-animal conflict.

During the same programme, PM Modi will also flag off two Amrit Bharat Express trains — Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak and Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar)  further strengthening rail connectivity between the Northeast and northern India.
