PM Modi Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on His Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister recalls Gandhi's message of truth, non-violence and service, urges people to support Swadeshi and buy Khadi.

NEW DELHI, Oct 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, recalling his enduring principles of truth, non-violence, compassion and public service.

In a post on X, Modi said Gandhi’s ideals continue to hold relevance and can inspire efforts to build a better society and a developed India.

He described Gandhi’s life as a lasting example of dedication to truth, non-violence, compassion and service, saying these values would continue to guide humanity across generations.

“May Bapu’s timeless message keep guiding us towards a better society and a ‘Viksit Bharat’,” the prime minister said.

In a video message, Modi highlighted the importance of October 2 for the country and said Gandhi’s philosophy had influenced people across the world.

He observed that Gandhi remained deeply respected despite staying away from positions of power and continued to have a place in the hearts of millions.

The prime minister expressed confidence that Gandhi’s principles would remain a source of inspiration for people in the years ahead.

Modi also recalled Gandhi’s emphasis on Swadeshi and linked it with the importance of Khadi. He appealed to citizens to purchase at least one Khadi product on October 2 as a way of promoting locally made goods.

“Mahatma Gandhi always encouraged everyone to adopt ‘Swadeshi’. In this process, Khadi remains a top priority. I appeal to everyone to buy at least one Khadi product on October 2 and proudly say that it is ‘Swadeshi’,” he said.

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. The day is observed every year as Gandhi Jayanti to commemorate his birth.

He was assassinated in Delhi on January 30, 1948.

The birth anniversary is also observed internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence, reflecting the global recognition of Gandhi’s philosophy of peaceful resistance and non-violence.

Modi’s message on Friday focused on preserving the values associated with Gandhi while encouraging citizens to incorporate the spirit of Swadeshi into their daily choices.
