PM Modi Praises Malaysia Reception, Discusses Strategic Ties with Anwar Ibrahim

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanks Malaysia for a grand welcome as he holds wide-ranging talks with PM Anwar Ibrahim to deepen strategic cooperation.

New Delhi, Feb 08 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his latest trip to Malaysia as both diplomatically significant and personally memorable, highlighting the warmth extended by the host nation alongside crucial discussions aimed at advancing bilateral relations.

Speaking after an official reception on Sunday, the Indian leader conveyed appreciation to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his administration for what he called an exceptionally thoughtful welcome, noting that the gesture reflected the depth of friendship between the two countries.

State reception at Perdana Putra

The formal ceremony unfolded at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya, the Malaysian Prime Minister’s office complex, where Modi was accorded a Guard of Honour. The occasion also set the stage for delegation-level negotiations, signalling a shared commitment to inject fresh momentum into the partnership.

Soon after the event, Modi remarked on social media that India and Malaysia are continuing to strengthen a relationship grounded in mutual trust and shared ambitions.

Personal gesture at airport underscores warmth

The visit began on a notable note when Anwar Ibrahim personally received the Indian Prime Minister upon his arrival in Kuala Lumpur. Senior Malaysian officials, including Human Resources Minister Ramanan Ramakrishnan and Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni, were also present.

The arrival featured ceremonial elements such as a red carpet greeting accompanied by traditional cultural performances, emphasising the longstanding civilisational links between the two nations. Modi later said he was deeply moved by the reception and looked forward to productive engagements.

Symbolic outreach to the Indian diaspora

In a gesture reflecting close people-to-people ties, both leaders travelled together to attend a gathering of the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur. The joint appearance highlighted the diaspora’s role as a living bridge between the countries.

Malaysia is home to nearly 2.9 million people of Indian origin, making it one of the largest overseas Indian populations globally and an important pillar of the bilateral relationship.

Wide-ranging talks on future cooperation

Bilateral discussions focused on expanding collaboration across key sectors such as defence, trade, innovation, and emerging technologies. Ahead of the trip, Modi had stressed the importance of elevating cooperation and unlocking new opportunities under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as carrying a “rich agenda,” expected to further energise an already multi-dimensional partnership.

Building on upgraded strategic ties

This marks Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since the two nations upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024. Rooted in centuries old cultural and commercial exchanges, the relationship has evolved into a modern strategic engagement spanning economic and security cooperation.
