NEW DELHI, May 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 62nd death anniversary, remembering his contribution to the nation’s democratic and developmental foundations.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed respect for the late Congress leader and former head of government.
“Paying homage to former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary,” Modi posted.
Jawaharlal Nehru played a pivotal role in shaping independent India after the country attained freedom in 1947. He served as the nation’s first Prime Minister from August 15, 1947, until his death on May 27, 1964, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in Indian political history.
Widely regarded as the architect of modern India, Nehru laid emphasis on parliamentary democracy, scientific advancement, industrial growth, and secular values during his tenure. Several major educational and scientific institutions, including IITs and research centers, were established under his leadership.
Leaders from different political parties and organisations also remembered Nehru on the occasion, paying tributes to his vision and role in nation-building.
Born on November 14, 1889, Nehru was a central figure in India’s freedom struggle and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. His birth anniversary is observed every year as Children’s Day across the country.
Pandit Nehru passed away in New Delhi on May 27, 1964, at the age of 74, leaving behind a lasting political and historical legacy.
