New Delhi, Feb 24 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday remembered former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on her 78th birth anniversary, describing her as a charismatic figure who earned enduring affection through decisive governance and compassion.
In a message posted on X, Modi said the late AIADMK leader carved a lasting place in public life through her administrative acumen and unwavering commitment to social welfare. He highlighted her emphasis on women’s empowerment, inclusive growth and strong law and order during her tenure in office.
Referring to her as a leader of grit and determination, the prime minister said she balanced empathy with firmness in decision making. He also fondly recalled their interactions, noting that she attended his oath taking ceremonies as Gujarat chief minister in 2002 and 2012.
During his recent ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, Modi spoke about the deep emotional bond she shared with the people of Tamil Nadu. He said her welfare measures for women and her focus on governance reforms strengthened her popularity across the state.
Recalling a personal memory, the prime minister mentioned her invitation to Chennai during Pongal, calling it a gesture he continues to cherish.
Popularly known as ‘Amma’, Jayalalithaa served multiple terms as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister between 1991 and 2016, leaving behind a significant political legacy marked by expansive social welfare initiatives.
