PM Modi Says Pokhran Tests Marked India’s Rise as a Scientific Power

Prime Minister says technological innovation and scientific research are driving India’s journey towards self-reliance and global leadership.

NEW DELHI, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Indian scientists and researchers on the occasion of National Technology Day, recalling the historic Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 as a defining moment in the country’s scientific and strategic journey.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the successful nuclear tests carried out in Rajasthan’s Pokhran desert demonstrated India’s scientific strength, determination, and technological capability before the world.
Modi noted that the achievements of May 11, 1998, continue to inspire generations of innovators, researchers, and young professionals working towards strengthening the country’s scientific ecosystem.
“Greetings on National Technology Day. We proudly remember the dedication and commitment of our scientists whose efforts led to the success of the Pokhran tests in 1998,” the Prime Minister stated.
Highlighting the growing role of innovation in national development, Modi said technology has emerged as one of the strongest foundations of a self-reliant India. He added that advancements in science and technology are creating opportunities, boosting economic growth, and transforming multiple sectors across the country.
The Prime Minister stressed that the government remains focused on supporting talent, promoting research, and encouraging innovation-driven solutions that can contribute to national progress and improve the lives of citizens.
Referring to the historic nuclear tests, Modi described Indian scientists as the true custodians of the nation’s pride and dignity. He said the Pokhran achievement established India as a confident and capable technological power on the global stage.
India conducted a series of five underground nuclear tests at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan on May 11 and May 13, 1998, under Operation Shakti. The first set of three tests was carried out simultaneously on May 11 at 3:45 PM IST, followed by two additional tests on May 13.
The successful operation marked a major turning point in India’s defence and strategic policy, eventually leading to the observance of National Technology Day every year on May 11 to celebrate the country’s achievements in science, engineering, and innovation.
National Technology Day is also recognised as an occasion to honour scientists, engineers, innovators, and technology experts who continue to contribute to India’s development and global competitiveness.
