NEW DELHI, Aug 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement, saying their courage and determination continue to inspire every Indian.
Marking the 84th anniversary of the landmark movement, Modi recalled the contribution of freedom fighters who responded to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for an end to British colonial rule.
“Remembering all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement. Their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian,” Modi said in a post on X.
The Quit India Movement 84th anniversary marks an important milestone in India’s journey towards independence. Launched on August 9, 1942, under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, the movement gave fresh momentum to the national struggle against British rule.
Modi said the call for the British to leave India infused renewed energy into the freedom movement and reflected the determination of people across the country to achieve freedom from colonial rule.
The movement emerged during a crucial phase of the freedom struggle, with the Congress adopting the Quit India resolution in Bombay in August 1942. Gandhi subsequently gave the historic call of “Do or Die”, urging Indians to intensify their efforts for independence.
The British authorities responded with widespread arrests of national leaders and suppression of the movement. Despite the crackdown, protests and acts of resistance continued across several parts of the country.
The anniversary is observed each year to remember the sacrifices and resolve of those who contributed to the freedom struggle and to reflect on the values associated with India’s independence movement.
The 84th anniversary also serves as a reminder of the collective determination that ultimately contributed to India’s independence in 1947.
