New Delhi, June 04 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver a major infrastructure and development push to Rajasthan on Saturday with the inauguration of the newly built terminal at Jodhpur Airport and the dedication of the refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Barmer district. Ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma visited Jodhpur Airport to inspect the new terminal building and said the state was on the cusp of receiving two landmark projects that would strengthen both connectivity and economic growth.
Calling the visit an important moment for Rajasthan, Sharma said the new airport terminal in Jodhpur was fully ready and would be inaugurated by the Prime Minister during his visit. He described the development as a major gift for the people of the state, adding that the airport expansion would not only improve passenger facilities but also support tourism, trade and regional mobility in western Rajasthan. The Chief Minister underlined that Jodhpur, being one of Rajasthan’s most prominent cities and an important cultural and commercial centre, required modern aviation infrastructure to meet rising demand, and the new terminal would help address that need.
The second major project on the Prime Minister’s Rajasthan itinerary is the refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Barmer district, a project that has long been seen as one of the state’s most ambitious industrial undertakings. Sharma said the refinery had been awaited for years and its dedication to the nation would mark a significant milestone in Rajasthan’s industrial journey. The project is expected to transform Barmer and surrounding districts by creating a strong petrochemical ecosystem, generating direct and indirect employment, and attracting ancillary industries in logistics, engineering, manufacturing and services.
Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari also welcomed Modi’s visit and said the projects would have a wide-ranging impact on the state’s development trajectory. She said the Prime Minister was bringing two major gifts for Rajasthan and stressed that both the inauguration and the launch of development works would benefit the state in multiple ways. According to her, employment opportunities are likely to rise as industrial activity expands, while improved infrastructure will support better connectivity and economic integration across regions. Her remarks reflected the state government’s effort to present the Prime Minister’s visit as both a political and developmental moment, with long-term implications for growth and public welfare.
The new terminal at Jodhpur Airport is being viewed as a strategic addition to Rajasthan’s transport network. Jodhpur serves as a gateway to the Thar region and attracts a significant number of domestic and international tourists due to its heritage attractions, desert tourism circuit, defence presence and business activity. With passenger traffic steadily increasing over the years, the need for a modern terminal with better capacity, smoother passenger handling, upgraded amenities and improved operational efficiency had become increasingly pressing. The inauguration is expected to ease congestion, enhance travel convenience and strengthen Jodhpur’s position as a major aviation hub in the region.
For the state government, the airport terminal is more than a civic facility; it is a symbol of Rajasthan’s ongoing push to modernise public infrastructure and improve connectivity between major cities, tourist centres and emerging industrial clusters. Better airport infrastructure is expected to benefit not only travellers but also sectors such as hospitality, handicrafts, export trade and event tourism. Jodhpur’s economy has strong links with tourism, furniture, handicrafts, defence establishments and regional commerce, and the new terminal could support broader economic activity by making the city more accessible and attractive for business and leisure visitors alike.
The Pachpadra refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, meanwhile, represents a different but equally important dimension of Rajasthan’s growth story. Located in Barmer district, the project has long been associated with the state’s hopes of leveraging its hydrocarbon resources and expanding its industrial base. Once fully operational, the complex is expected to process crude oil and produce a range of petroleum and petrochemical products, creating value addition within the state and reducing the need to move raw resources elsewhere for processing. It is also expected to stimulate industrialisation in western Rajasthan, a region that has often lagged behind more urbanised parts of the state in terms of manufacturing investment and employment generation.
The refinery project carries significance not only because of its scale, but also because of the wider economic chain it could trigger. Large industrial units of this nature typically generate jobs in construction, operations, maintenance, transportation, warehousing, packaging and associated services. They also create demand for housing, healthcare, education, retail and local infrastructure in surrounding areas. For Barmer, which has already gained prominence because of oil exploration activity, the refinery could become a long-term anchor of economic transformation. It has the potential to bring new roads, logistics facilities, townships and service networks while integrating the district more closely with national energy and manufacturing supply chains.
The timing of the Prime Minister’s visit also gives it political and symbolic weight. Rajasthan has remained an important state in national politics, and high-profile visits tied to development projects often carry a message of continued central support for infrastructure and investment. By combining an aviation project in Jodhpur with a major industrial complex in Barmer, the visit spans both public-facing civic infrastructure and large-scale economic development, allowing the government to project a broad development narrative. It also underscores the Centre’s emphasis on visible, capital-intensive projects as markers of governance and long-term economic planning.
While Rajasthan is set to receive two major development milestones, the Prime Minister’s day is also expected to include a significant stop in Gujarat, where he is scheduled to inaugurate the commencement of commercial production at the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Sanand. According to the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the unit has been established with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission and will begin supplying semiconductor chips to customers in India and abroad after its inauguration. The facility has been set up by CG Semi, a subsidiary of CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited, in collaboration with partners from Japan and Thailand.
The Gujarat leg of the visit highlights another priority area for the Centre semiconductors and electronics manufacturing which has become central to India’s effort to reduce import dependence and position itself as a trusted global manufacturing destination. Prime Minister Modi is expected to inspect semiconductor manufacturing processes at the Sanand facility and address a public gathering there. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries are also expected to be present during the event. Taken together, the Rajasthan and Gujarat engagements indicate a broader attempt to showcase progress across multiple sectors, from aviation and petrochemicals to advanced electronics and chip manufacturing.
For Rajasthan, however, the spotlight remains firmly on Jodhpur and Barmer. The new terminal and the refinery project touch on two crucial themes in the state’s development agenda: stronger connectivity and deeper industrialisation. Improved airport infrastructure can support tourism, business travel and regional mobility, while the refinery project can create jobs, attract investment and reshape the economic profile of western Rajasthan. The state government has framed both projects as transformational steps, and the Prime Minister’s presence is expected to add national visibility to that message.
As preparations conclude and security arrangements tighten ahead of the visit, officials in Rajasthan are projecting confidence that the Prime Minister’s programmes will mark a defining day for the state’s infrastructure journey. The inauguration of the Jodhpur Airport terminal and the dedication of the Pachpadra refinery cum petrochemical complex are likely to be presented as evidence of Rajasthan’s evolving development landscape one where transport modernisation, industrial expansion and investment-led growth are increasingly central to the state’s future. Whether measured in passenger convenience, job creation, industrial output or investor confidence, the impact of the two projects is expected to extend well beyond the ceremonial events of the day.
