OTTAWA, Oct. 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11–12, 2026, as India and Canada seek to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across key strategic sectors.
The visit follows a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which the two leaders agreed to build on the improving momentum in bilateral ties and pursue tangible outcomes in areas of mutual interest.
Announcing the visit, the High Commission of India in Ottawa confirmed the dates in a post on X, stating that Modi would travel to Canada on December 11 and 12.
The diplomatic mission also highlighted the leaders’ shared commitment to advancing cooperation in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people relations.
Earlier, on October 13, Modi described his conversation with Carney as warm and productive. He said both countries were committed to strengthening their strategic partnership and achieving concrete progress across several priority areas.
The Indian prime minister also emphasised the broader international significance of the partnership, saying that India and Canada could contribute to a more stable and prosperous world through closer cooperation.
Trade is expected to be a key focus of the engagement. According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity.
The proposed agreement is intended to strengthen economic engagement between the two countries and support their ambition to double bilateral trade by 2030.
Beyond commercial relations, cooperation in energy, emerging technologies and security is also expected to feature prominently in discussions as the two governments work to broaden their strategic engagement.
The December visit will provide an opportunity for both leaders to review progress on shared priorities, explore new areas of collaboration and establish a roadmap for future cooperation.
The renewed diplomatic engagement signals a mutual interest in translating recent discussions into practical outcomes and building a more resilient, mutually beneficial relationship between India and Canada.
