CHURACHANDPUR, Sept 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged various outfits in Manipur to shun violence and assured that the Centre stands firmly with the people, aiming to transform the state into a symbol of peace and prosperity.
Addressing a public gathering in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur during his first visit since ethnic clashes erupted in May 2023, the Prime Minister said, “It is unfortunate that violence happened here. Today, I want to promise you that the Government of India is with you and I am with you.”
He appealed to all groups and organisations to adopt the path of peace, underlining that peace is the foundation of development. Modi highlighted that the Centre’s continuous efforts have facilitated talks between the warring sides.
The Prime Minister said the government has significantly increased funding for road and rail projects in Manipur since 2014, strengthening connectivity and economic opportunities. “India will soon become the world’s third-largest economy, and I want to ensure the fruits of development reach every corner of the country,” he added.
Calling Manipur a land of courage and valour, Modi said he was deeply touched by the warm welcome he received while travelling from Imphal to Churachandpur. He noted that displaced people are looking toward a “new dawn” and expressed confidence in the people’s resolve to embrace peace.
Earlier in the day, he inaugurated projects worth over ₹7,300 crore, focusing on infrastructure, healthcare, and development of tribal communities in the hill districts. “These projects will improve the quality of life and bring new opportunities for the people of Manipur,” he said.
