Power theft is a crime: JPDCL launches major crackdown in Jammu

JAMMU, MAY 07: Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) intensified its enforcement campaign against electricity theft by conducting extensive inspection drives at Javed Nagar and Gujjar Basti , besides Upper Chinore and Roop Nagar, falling under Electric Division-II and Electric Division-III, respectively.

Special Enforcement Teams (SETs) inspected a total of 61 electricity installations comprising domestic and commercial consumers and detected widespread violations of electricity norms.

During inspections at Javed Nagar and Gujjar Basti, nearly 90% of inspected installations were found indulging in illegal consumption of electricity, with 27 commercial establishments using power through unauthorized means and failing to produce electricity bills. The drive also revealed 02 cases of excessive load usage beyond sanctioned limits and 1 case of a damaged meter indicating possible meter tampering.

Similarly, inspections at Upper Chinore and Roop Nagar exposed serious irregularities including 13 cases of smart meter bypassing through illegal hooking, 11 illegal electricity connections, 3 commercial establishments operating on domestic supply and 4 consumers violating sanctioned load norms, all of whom were booked for penal action and load enhancement.

JPDCL stated that unauthorized use of electricity adversely impacts public resources and the overall efficiency of the power distribution system. The Corporation emphasized that all consumers are expected to adhere to prescribed regulations and maintain sanctioned load norms. It was informed that appropriate action, as per the provisions of the Electricity Act and applicable regulations, shall be taken in cases where violations are noticed. JPDCL further conveyed that inspection and enforcement activities shall continue as part of routine system strengthening measures, while appealing to consumers to regularize connections, promote responsible electricity usage and extend cooperation in ensuring safe, reliable and quality power supply for all.
