PPA Ousts BJP to Take Control of Pasighat Municipal Council in Arunachal

Regional party wins five of eight wards, signaling a shift in local political dynamics in East Siang

Arunachal pardesh, Dec 20 : In a stunning political upset, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) emerged victorious in the Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) elections on Saturday, unseating the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the civic body.

Official results declared by the Municipal Returning Officer showed that the PPA secured five of the eight wards, giving it a clear majority in the Council. Victorious candidates included Tagom Padung (Ward 1), Mem Tamut (Ward 2), Oyon Pabin (Ward 3), Kamin Lego (Ward 4), and Rahul Tamuk (Ward 5).

The BJP won two seats, with Mary Gao (Ward 6) and Pema Dolma Moyong (Ward 7) emerging successful, while Ward 8 went to Independent candidate Oni Tamuk. Among the winners, PPA’s Tagom Padung achieved the largest victory margin of 361 votes, while BJP’s Mary Gao registered the narrowest margin at 24 votes.

The outcome is seen as a significant setback for the BJP in Pasighat, the headquarters of East Siang district and the hometown of BJP State President Kaling Moyong. Conversely, the result boosts the PPA’s position ahead of future local and state-level contests.

Supporters of the PPA celebrated the victory as a mandate for local leadership and grassroots issues, while authorities appealed for calm and orderly conduct following the results.

Counting for the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) election is ongoing under tight security, alongside the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) polls across the state. The elections for PRIs, IMC, and PMC were held on December 15.
