NEW DELHI, Aug 23: A 30 year old Assistant Section Officer (ASO) with the Ministry of Defence was found dead at her residence in Bharthal village near Sector-23, Dwarka, on August 21, following which police registered a case of alleged abetment of suicide against her husband and members of her matrimonial family.
The deceased was identified as Nazia Khanam, daughter of Towab Khan. Police said a PCR call reporting an alleged suicide was received at Sector-23 police station at around 4:21 pm on August 21.
Following the incident, the police took possession of the body and informed the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in accordance with the prescribed procedure. The body was later shifted to the mortuary at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for further legal formalities.
Nazia was working as an ASO in the Ministry of Defence and had married Mohd Azam Ali Khan on April 11, 2026, according to Muslim customs. Reports said she was pregnant when she died.
Parents later allege matrimonial harassment
Police said the woman’s family members appeared before the Executive Magistrate on August 21 and submitted written statements. At that stage, they reportedly did not raise allegations or express suspicion against her husband or other members of the matrimonial family.
The following day, however, Nazia’s parents returned to the SDM and submitted a fresh complaint alleging harassment and wrongdoing by her husband and his relatives.
Following the complaint and the information emerging during the proceedings, police registered an FIR under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Section 108 deals with abetment of suicide, while Section 85 relates to cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman.
Police examining evidence
Investigators are examining statements from the concerned individuals and other available evidence as part of the probe.
Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations made by the woman’s parents are being examined.
The case comes a day after a 26 year old Army personnel was found dead inside a hotel room in Delhi’s Satya Niketan.
The deceased, identified as Anil Sai Tejja Vallepu of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, was serving in the Army and posted in Hisar, according to police. A suicide note was also reportedly recovered from the hotel room.
