NEW DELHI, Sept 12: President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday met her Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian and stressed India’s commitment to lasting peace in the region, calling for conflicts to be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia following fresh US airstrikes on Iranian targets and mounting economic pressure on Tehran through sanctions.
Pezeshkian, who is visiting India for the BRICS Summit, called on Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan during his first visit to the country.
Welcoming the Iranian president, Murmu appreciated Tehran’s support during India’s BRICS presidency and highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the discussions covered the deep-rooted ties between India and Iran, including their strong cultural connections and people-to-people relations.
The Indian president reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to promoting enduring peace in the region and emphasised that disputes should be settled through peaceful means, particularly dialogue and diplomacy.
The meeting comes as the West Asia conflict, which began in late February this year, continues to fuel concerns over regional stability and wider geopolitical tensions.
