Prime Minister Modi Discusses Deteriorating Security Situation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

Gaza Health Crisis: Over 3,700 Lives Lost as MEA Strives to Aid Stranded Indians

19-10-2023 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a conversation with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, during which they both expressed deep concern about the escalating terrorism, violence, and deteriorating security situation in the region. In his statement on X (formerly Twitter), Modi reiterated India’s consistent and principled stance on the Israel-Palestine issue.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is making significant efforts to evacuate four Indians who are stranded in the Gaza Strip, despite the challenging circumstances. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also mentioned that one Indian national is currently in the West Bank region.

During a press conference, Bagchi expressed India’s concerns about civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation arising from the Israel-Hamas conflict. MEA has called upon the international community to unite against terrorism.

India has been providing support to Palestine and its refugees by contributing to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). A total of $29.53 million has been contributed between 2002-2023, with a commitment of an annual contribution of $5 million for the next two years.

Notably, under Operation Ajay, India has already successfully evacuated over 1,200 individuals, including 18 Nepali citizens, from the conflict-ridden region.

The Gaza Strip is currently grappling with a severe public health crisis due to water shortages and a lack of essential supplies. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 3,700 people have lost their lives since the Hamas attack on October 7.
