Mumbai, Mar 06 : Priyanka Chopra Jonas says her journey in Hollywood has been defined by bold decisions, patience and the determination to rebuild her identity in a new industry, even after achieving massive success in India.
Speaking in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the global star reflected on her transition from Bollywood to international projects, saying she concentrated on making careful career choices rather than worrying about how her Indian fan base might shape her path abroad.
“When I started working in Hollywood, I did not really think about how my audience in India might influence my career,” she said, adding that her focus was on selecting the right opportunities that would help her adapt smoothly to a different entertainment ecosystem.
Despite entering the global market as one of India’s most recognisable celebrities, Chopra Jonas acknowledged that her previous success did not automatically translate in the United States. She had to carve out her own space, advocate for meaningful roles and avoid being limited to stereotypical portrayals.
Over time, she has built a strong professional relationship with Amazon, which has played a key role in expanding her international presence. Her long-standing first-look deal with the streaming platform has resulted in several projects, including the spy thriller Citadel, the action-comedy Heads of State and the upcoming adventure drama The Bluff.
For the actor, the streaming era has created opportunities to reach wider audiences while also allowing her to take creative risks and work on ambitious projects that align with her vision.
In The Bluff, Chopra Jonas takes on the role of a female pirate captain a character she describes as both powerful and emotionally layered. She said she was initially surprised to learn about the historical presence of women pirates and later explored the subject in depth.
“When the script came to me, I did not even know that female pirates actually existed,” she said, noting that history includes many notable women who commanded ships and led crews at sea.
Through the film, she hopes to bring attention to these lesser known stories and inspire audiences, particularly young women, by showcasing strong female characters in genres traditionally dominated by men.
Chopra Jonas also spoke about the contrasts between the Indian and American film industries, including differences in production culture, time management and on-set hierarchy. However, she emphasised that the growing global nature of entertainment is gradually bridging these divides.
According to her, international storytelling is increasingly reflecting diverse cultures and perspectives, allowing artists to work across industries more freely than before.
Behind the glamour of global premieres and big budget productions, Chopra Jonas describes her Hollywood journey as a second phase of personal and professional growth. She believes the experience has helped her rediscover her voice and strengthen her confidence in choosing projects that resonate with her.
Reflecting on her character in The Bluff, she said the role captures both strength and vulnerability. The pirate captain, she explained, is a fierce fighter but also a mother determined to protect her family, making the story emotionally compelling.
As the film prepares for release, Chopra Jonas sees it as another step in her evolving career — one that continues to blend Indian roots with a global stage.
