Priyanka Gandhi Condemns Iran Leader’s Killing as ‘Despicable’

Congress criticises Centre’s stance on Middle East conflict, calls targeted assassination “despicable”

MP, March 2 : Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, describing the targeted assassination of a sovereign nation’s leadership as “despicable” and warranting unequivocal condemnation.

In a statement, she alleged that “so called leaders of the democratic world” were responsible for orchestrating the act and questioned the global response to the development. The Congress leader also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of aligning too closely with the leadership of Israel and the United States during a period of escalating regional tensions.

The Congress party termed the government’s reaction to the conflict involving Iran as a departure from India’s traditional foreign policy principles, calling it inconsistent with the country’s stated values and strategic interests. Gandhi argued that India was facing diplomatic costs due to what she described as the “substance and style” of the Prime Minister’s international engagements.

She further expressed concern over the widening scope of hostilities in West Asia, stating that multiple countries were being drawn into the confrontation. Emphasising the need for restraint, she invoked the words of Mahatma Gandhi, saying, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” and urged global actors to prioritise peace over further escalation.

Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh also criticised the Prime Minister’s recent diplomatic outreach, alleging that India’s position lacked moral clarity amid mounting international tensions.
