New Delhi, Dec 01 : Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dismissing the Opposition’s demand for detailed parliamentary debates as “drama.” She asserted that open discussions on public issues are essential to democratic functioning, and insisted that preventing such debates is the “real drama.”
Speaking to reporters after PM Modi’s address marking the opening of the Winter Session of Parliament, Priyanka Gandhi said Parliament must discuss urgent matters such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the rising air pollution crisis.
“There are urgent issues. The election situation, SIR and pollution are huge issues. Let us discuss them. What is Parliament for? Raising issues is not drama. Drama is stopping discussions that matter to the public,” she said.
Her remarks came shortly after PM Modi appealed to the Opposition to avoid “procedural drama” and focus on meaningful debate. The Prime Minister urged lawmakers not to be “frazzled” by recent election results and to prioritize constructive legislation over disruptions.
“Don’t do drama in Parliament, but deliver,” PM Modi said, calling for cooperation from both sides of the House. He also cautioned his own alliance against viewing electoral victories with arrogance, and praised the high voter turnout in the Bihar polls especially among women as a sign of India’s democratic strength.
PM Modi emphasised that “policy, not sloganeering” should guide parliamentary proceedings. “Negativity must be set aside; nation-building requires a positive approach,” he added.
The Winter Session, the sixth session of the 18th Lok Sabha, is expected to be intense, with the government pushing major reforms. Ten key bills are lined up, including the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025, and the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
