CHANDIGARH, Nov 15: The Punjab Government on Saturday suspended Amritsar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh for allegedly failing to take stringent action against gangsters operating in the region.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while announcing the suspension, said the state would not tolerate “any lapse or laxity” in tackling gangsterism. The action marks one of the most significant steps taken by the AAP Government against an IPS officer since coming to power.
The ruling AAP has recently been facing criticism from opposition parties over deteriorating law and order, particularly after a series of extortion attempts and firing incidents linked to criminal gangs.
During the campaign for the Tarn Taran bypoll, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal had reaffirmed the party’s commitment to eliminating gangster networks from Punjab, warning gangsters to “leave the state within a week.”
