Putin Lands in Delhi Today as India, Russia Set Stage for Major Defence & Energy Talks

Two-day visit to focus on defence cooperation, energy security, trade expansion, and India–Russia strategic roadmap

Russia, Dec 04: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India on Thursday for a two-day visit that brings defence, energy, and economic cooperation back to the forefront of the India–Russia relationship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host him for a private dinner soon after his arrival in New Delhi, setting the tone for a high-stakes diplomatic engagement.

Putin’s visit  his first since the start of the Ukraine conflict comes at a time when US sanctions have put additional pressure on New Delhi, sharpening the focus on military supplies, long-term energy partnerships, and bilateral trade mechanisms. The visit also follows Moscow’s recent approval of a major defence agreement for India, signalling renewed momentum in security ties.

High-level talks to lead 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit

The formal discussions begin on Friday, when Putin receives a ceremonial welcome ahead of the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit. Delegations from both sides are preparing for wide ranging talks on strategic cooperation, defence procurement, and measures to secure existing joint-production lines.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has indicated that the Su-57 fighter jet could feature in the conversations, hinting at the possibility of discussions on next-generation defence platforms.

New agreements expected on defence, labour and trade

Both countries are expected to sign several agreements during the visit. One of the key outcomes may be a labour mobility pact enabling Indian workers to take up employment opportunities in Russia.

New Delhi and Moscow are also set to revisit the long-pending India–Eurasian Economic Union free trade agreement, aimed at boosting trade and economic cooperation across multiple sectors.

Private dinner, state banquet and media outreach

Putin’s first engagement after landing will be a private dinner hosted by PM Modi, mirroring the hospitality extended to Modi during his Moscow visit last year. A state banquet by President Droupadi Murmu will follow Friday’s summit.

As part of a broader soft-power initiative, Putin is also scheduled to launch the India channel of RT, Russia’s state run broadcaster.

Visit to shape future roadmap: MEA

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit provides an opportunity for both nations to review the trajectory of their “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” and define the next phase of engagement. The leaders will also exchange views on key regional and global developments amid rapidly shifting geopolitical dynamics.
