New Delhi,Feb 17 : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday remembered former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur on his death anniversary, describing him as a tireless advocate for the rights of the deprived and marginalised sections of society.
In a message shared on social media, Gandhi paid homage to the veteran socialist, saying his lifelong struggle for equality and dignity for the oppressed continues to inspire generations committed to social justice.
Karpoori Thakur, popularly known as “Jan Nayak,” served twice as Chief Minister of Bihar and is widely recognised for introducing landmark reservation reforms in the late 1970s to enhance representation of backward classes in government services and education. His policy interventions significantly influenced the trajectory of affirmative action debates in India.
Born in 1924, Thakur rose from modest beginnings and participated in the freedom movement before establishing himself as a prominent socialist voice in national politics. He earned a reputation for personal simplicity and steadfast commitment to uplifting economically and socially disadvantaged communities.
Leaders from across the political spectrum also paid tribute, acknowledging his enduring contribution to democratic values and inclusive governance.
