Rahul Gandhi to Visit Assam to Pay Tribute to Legendary Singer Zubeen Garg

Congress leader to offer tributes at singer’s resting place and meet family amid heightened tensions following protests

Assam, Oct 16 : Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to visit Assam on October 17 to pay homage to the state’s iconic singer, Zubeen Garg, the Congress party announced on Wednesday.

According to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gandhi will arrive in Guwahati and proceed to Sonapur, on the city outskirts, where Zubeen Garg has been laid to rest. He will offer floral tributes at the site and later visit the singer’s residence to meet the bereaved family and express condolences.

The APCC Media Department, coordinating the visit, said all arrangements have been made to ensure the programme is conducted in a dignified and orderly manner. Gandhi’s visit underscores the deep respect and emotional connection people across Assam share with the late singer.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi expressed concern over violent incidents outside Baksa District Jail, where five accused in the Zubeen Garg case were brought under heavy police escort. He called the events “unprecedented and unfortunate” and urged citizens to maintain peace, emphasizing that justice can only be achieved through legal processes.

“The law enforcement machinery had a responsibility to anticipate the situation and take preventive measures. Their failure has contributed to the unrest witnessed today,” Gogoi said. He also condemned attacks on media personnel and the torching of a regional media vehicle, urging authorities to ensure the safety of journalists.

In response to escalating tension, the Baksa district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prevent further violence.
