CHENNAI, Aug 24: Madurai Panthers booked their place in the Tamil Nadu Premier League final after rain forced the abandonment of their Qualifier 1 clash against Trichy Grand Cholas at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
The Panthers advanced on the basis of their position at the top of the league standings, while Trichy will get another opportunity to reach the final through Qualifier 2.
The match was called off after rain interrupted proceedings at Chepauk. Trichy Grand Cholas had reached 50 for one in 4.5 overs when the weather made further play impossible.
Table position proves decisive
Madurai’s strong league-stage performance ultimately proved crucial. As the top ranked side, the Panthers benefited from the tournament’s playoff rules when no result was possible in the first qualifier.
The outcome sends Madurai directly into the championship match, while Trichy will have to negotiate another knockout fixture to keep their title hopes alive.
The Panthers had entered the playoffs in strong form and secured Qualifier 1 after finishing first in the league phase. Their route to the final has now been shortened by the washout, giving the side additional preparation time ahead of the title clash.
Trichy get another chance
Despite missing out on a direct passage to the final, Trichy remain in contention for the TNPL trophy.
The Grand Cholas will feature in Qualifier 2, where a victory would send them into the final against Madurai.
The rain interruption has therefore reshaped the playoff picture without ending Trichy’s campaign. With the tournament final scheduled for later in the week, both teams remain within touching distance of the title.
