Known for his dynamic batting prowess and exceptional fielding skills, Powell, a familiar face in the Caribbean Premier League, triggered an intense bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite the fierce competition, RR emerged victorious with the hefty bid, reflecting their strategic approach to bolster the team. This strategic spending, however, amounted to nearly half of the team’s purse.
Adding to their pursuit of talent, Rajasthan Royals also set their sights on England’s Harry Brook, albeit facing stiff competition from Delhi Capitals, who ultimately outbid RR with a Rs 4 crore offer. Meanwhile, the early stages of the auction witnessed an intense battle for World Cup-winner Travis Head, with Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings going head-to-head in the bidding war. Ultimately, SRH clinched the Australian all-rounder with a winning bid of Rs 6.8 crore.
The IPL Governing Council had provided the franchises with a list of 1,166 players, which, based on their wish list, was pruned down to 333 players, including 214 Indians, 119 overseas players, and two from associate nations. With a collective spending cap of Rs 262.95 crore, the 10 franchises geared up to secure players for the 77 available slots, with 30 slots earmarked for overseas players.
In a surprising turn of events, Australian star Steve Smith found no takers in the first set of players, despite setting his base price at Rs 2 crore. Other notable players like South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, experienced Indian middle-order batter Manish Pandey, and former Karnataka and current Vidarbha batter Karun Nair also went unsold in the initial phase of the auction.
