Rajpal Yadav Surrenders at Tihar After Delhi HC Denies Relief in Cheque Bounce Case

Actor begins six-month sentence as court cites repeated failure to repay dues and denies extension request.

New Delhi, Feb 06 : Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on Thursday evening after the Delhi High Court declined to grant him additional time in a long pending cheque bounce matter. Jail officials confirmed that he reported around 4 pm, following which routine admission procedures were initiated.

The case stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, which accused Yadav and his wife of issuing multiple cheques that were later dishonoured and failing to clear the outstanding amount. A Delhi magistrate court convicted the couple in 2018, sentencing the actor to six months’ imprisonment. The conviction was subsequently upheld by a sessions court in 2019.

A day before surrendering, Yadav moved the High Court seeking a one-week extension, stating he had arranged ₹50 lakh and required additional time to complete the payment. The court, however, refused relief and emphasised that celebrity status does not entitle anyone to special consideration. It also observed that the actor had violated several undertakings promising repayment to the complainant.

The High Court had earlier suspended his conviction in June 2024, encouraging him to pursue a sincere settlement. However, with commitments unmet, the court directed him on February 2 to surrender, noting that repeated defaults left no room for leniency.
