Rajya Sabha Bypoll for Murugan’s Vacated Seat in Madhya Pradesh on November 12

The Election Commission has announced the polling date to fill the vacancy left by L Murugan, who resigned from the Upper House to focus on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

NEW DELHI, October 22: The by-election to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, following the resignation of former Union Minister of State L Murugan, will be held on November 12, the Election Commission announced on Thursday.

Murugan resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Union Council of Ministers on October 14. He had served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting.

His parliamentary term was scheduled to continue until April 2, 2030. However, he stepped down before completing his tenure, stating that he wanted to concentrate on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu.

The Election Commission’s announcement sets the schedule for filling the vacancy in the Upper House of Parliament. The election will be conducted in accordance with the prescribed procedures for Rajya Sabha bypolls.

The BJP, which governs Madhya Pradesh, is expected to have an advantage in the contest because Rajya Sabha members are elected by elected members of state legislative assemblies rather than through direct public voting.

Under the established procedure, polling will take place on November 12, with counting scheduled for the same evening after voting concludes.

The bypoll will determine who occupies the seat for the remainder of the existing term, which runs until April 2030.
