Rajya Sabha Schedules Holiday on March 19-20, Will Resume Sessions on March 28-29

Festival season prompts adjustment in parliamentary calendar to accommodate members

New Delhi, Mar 16: The Rajya Sabha will not hold its scheduled sittings on March 19-20, 2026, in view of multiple festivals, including Navaratri, Gudipadwa, and Ramadan, the House Chairman C P Radhakrishnan announced on Monday. The government approved the request from members to avoid scheduling sessions during the festive period.

To compensate for the cancelled dates, the Upper House will instead convene on the weekend, March 28-29, ensuring that legislative work continues without disruption. The decision follows discussions in the Business Advisory Committee held on March 11, 2026, where members highlighted the significance of festival observances.

Chairman Radhakrishnan informed members, “The request has been considered favourably. Accordingly, the sittings scheduled for March 19 and 20 stand cancelled. The Council will now sit on March 28 and 29 to make up for the lost time.”

The adjustment underscores the Rajya Sabha’s flexibility in accommodating cultural and religious observances while maintaining the continuity of parliamentary business.
