Principal Secy B.M. Sharma Hails Rangyug’s Theatre-for-Charity as Inspiring Cultural Milestone

  • Standing Ovation for ‘Chanchlo’: Rangyug and BIG FM Unite Stage and Social Responsibility in Jammu

Jammu, September 20: In a rare theatrical evening that combined art with empathy, Rangyug—Theatre for Social Change and Self-Realization, in collaboration with 92.7 BIG FM, presented a special charity show of its widely acclaimed Dogri play “Chanchlo” at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. The proceeds of the show will support the victims of the recent floods in Jammu & Kashmir.

The performance was graced by B.M. Sharma (IFS), Principal Secretary, Department of Culture, Harvinder Kour, Secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and Ashwani Khajuria, Director Hospitality and Protocols, who commended Rangyug’s initiative of combining theatre with social responsibility. They also appreciated the role of 92.7 BIG FM in partnering for this noble cause through their campaign Hands for Humanity.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri B.M. Sharma said: “What makes this effort truly remarkable is that Rangyug has connected theatre with charity — something very rare in our cultural landscape. Dedicating an entire performance to raise support for flood-affected families is an extraordinary gesture. It proves that art is not only about aesthetics but also about empathy and responsibility. Such initiatives set an inspiring example for the entire cultural fraternity. Rangyug has consistently given theatre a new direction by choosing subjects that speak to the soul of society. Through this production, Rangyug has succeeded in transforming a simple story into a moving social statement.”

He further added: “RJ Dr. Juhie Mohan deserves the highest praise for carrying the entire play on her shoulders with such brilliance. Her command over the stage, her effortless shifts between emotions, and her ability to keep the audience engaged for more than ninety minutes in a solo act speak volumes about her artistry. Under the seasoned direction of Shri Deepak Kumar, the play attained a rare balance of depth, humour, and emotional intensity. This is the kind of theatre that enriches our cultural identity and strengthens the pride of the Dogri language.”

The play, adapted in Dogri by RJ Dr. Juhie Mohan from Nadira Zaheer Babbar’s Hindi play “Sakubai”, captures the spirit, struggles, and inner strength of a domestic help — a voice often ignored but deeply relatable. With its sharp dialogues, humour, and emotional depth, “Chanchlo” not only entertained but also provoked reflection on society’s attitudes toward the marginalised.

The play was backed by a dedicated creative and backstage team: Ashish Sharma as Assistant Director, Shivan Gupta on music and sound, Pankaj Sharma on lights, Shammi Dhamir on make-up, and Neharika on props. Raj Kumar Behrupia, Soham Kashyap, Sumit, Poonam, and Aamir Akram Khan also played important roles, ensuring the seamless execution and success of the performance.

The charity show drew an overwhelming response, with a standing ovation at the end—a powerful testimony to both the impact of Chanchlo and the ensemble’s dedication. It stood out as one of the most compelling recent presentations in Dogri theatre.

Rangyug and BIG FM extended heartfelt gratitude to all donors, sponsors, and contributors whose generous support to this humanitarian cause for flood-affected communities made the charity initiative truly impactful. All proceeds from donor tickets and donations will be directed towards relief and rehabilitation measures. Rangyug also kept the performance open for those unable to contribute monetarily, ensuring inclusivity in this collective cause.
