Reflection and Gratitude: 41st National Pensioners Day in Jammu

The 41st National Pensioners Day took place in the center of Jammu and was marked by contemplation, thankfulness, and profound respect for the enormous contributions made by retired public servants. Taking place at the esteemed Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), the celebration was more than just a regular observance thanks to the careful planning of the Central Government Pensioners Welfare Association Jammu (CGPWAJ). Rather, it transformed into a profound and authentic homage to the individuals who devoted a significant portion of their lives to serving the country. Dignitaries of varied stature, including State Election Commissioner B.R Sharma, Patron CGPWAJ S.S. Wazir, and President CGPWAJ Kuldeep Khoda, graced the occasion. Their presence not only underscored the significance of the event but also added gravitas to the collective acknowledgment of the retirees’ lifetime of service.

In a landmark speech, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo acknowledged the critical role that retirees play in society and set the tone for the celebration. He urged everyone to appreciate and respect these retirees, pointing out that their commitment is an essential component of the fabric of this country. When Dulloo called on society to recognize and honour these wise men and women in all areas of life, his words rang true. Dulloo thanked pensioners for their unwavering devotion throughout their careers, highlighting their tenacity, diligence, and unwavering dedication as the cornerstones of a prospering country.  This acknowledgment acted as an emotional reminder of the debt of appreciation given to individuals who have dedicated their careers to public service in a society that frequently ignores the sacrifices made by retirees. The Chief Secretary emphasized the critical role that retirees will play in determining the course of the country. His emphasis on the value of showing honour and respect to these seasoned citizens was not empty platitudes; rather, it was a genuine appeal to acknowledge the abundance of knowledge and insight they possess. By doing this, he emphasized that retired officers provide younger officers with excellent role models by demonstrating how to have a successful and morally driven service career. The mention of a significant Supreme Court ruling was one of the speech’s most noteworthy features, according to Dulloo. This judgment recognized pension not as a discretionary bounty but as an essential right. This acknowledgment ensures that pensioners can lead a dignified life after dedicating their precious time to the welfare of the public. By bringing attention to this legal validation, Dulloo not only celebrated the rights of pensioners but also highlighted the evolving societal perspectives regarding the dignity and rights of retirees. Dulloo’s laudatory comments were not merely rhetorical; they were substantiated by tangible actions. He acknowledged and appreciated the commendable initiatives undertaken by CGPWAJ, assuring the pensioners in attendance that the administration of the Union Territory is wholly committed to addressing their concerns and grievances. This commitment, expressed by the Chief Secretary, reiterated the importance of a supportive and responsive bureaucracy. The ceremony took a heart-warming turn as pensioners who had achieved the remarkable milestone of reaching the age of 85 years or above were honoured during the event. This symbolic gesture not only recognized their enduring contributions to society but also served as an embodiment of the administration’s genuine appreciation for their service.

President of CGPWAJ, Kuldeep Khoda, echoed the sentiment that pensioners serve as invaluable sources of guidance for young officers. Their decisions, he noted, have played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of the younger generation. Khoda’s words reflected the collective acknowledgment of the influence and impact that retirees continue to have even beyond their active service years. S.S. Wazir, Patron CGPWAJ, took the audience through a comprehensive overview of the association’s functioning and achievements. His insights provided context to the audience about the collective efforts made by the association in championing the cause of pensioners’ welfare. This segment of the event illuminated the tireless work undertaken by the association in advocating for the rights and well-being of retirees. General Secretary K.B. Jandial elucidated on the significance of the day, delving into the historical context and emphasizing the pivotal role pensioners play in the larger societal narrative. His address not only educated the audience about the evolution of National Pensioners Day but also instilled a deeper understanding of the societal contributions of retirees.

The Directorate of AYUSH J&K, in partnership with CGPWAJ, arranged a Geriatric Wellness Awareness Camp, which added a holistic element to the event beyond what was typically done. Held concurrently with the main event, this camp was designed to improve the health and well-being of senior attendees. Age-related disorders and Ayurvedic therapies were the topic of a Health Talk given by medical professionals from the AYUSH Department. Senior health difficulties were emphasized by Dr. Arun Gupta, who also endorsed the efficacy of Ayurveda, Yoga, Panchakarma, and Ksharsutra in treating them. In her discussion on mental health issues, Dr. Monika Gupta recommended combining yoga poses with Ayurvedic therapies. In addition to imparting important health knowledge, the programme inspired seniors to take an active role in activities that improve their general well-being.

Eventually, Jammu’s 41st National Pensioners Day was more than just a ceremonial occasion—rather, it was a demonstration of the community’s respect and gratitude for the retirees who have devoted their lives to serving the public good. Gracious and heartfelt, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo’s speech laid the groundwork for an occasion honouring retirees’ rights as well as their dignity. An additional useful element to the celebration was the addition of a Geriatric Wellness Awareness Camp, which further demonstrated the organization’s dedication to the welfare of senior citizens. The interactive workshops and comprehensive Health talks emphasized the significance of holistic health in the lives of retirees, recognizing that well-being is an essential component of a dignified post-retirement life that extends beyond legal rights. Gratitude, respect, and a renewed resolve to make sure retirees get the recognition, assistance, and care they so richly deserve pervaded the air after the ceremony. In addition to being a day of ceremonial celebration, Jammu’s 41st National Pensioners Day reaffirmed society’s need to honour those who have given their lives in the service of the country.
